Today's Storage Space, in two parts from a random spindle and starts with the Kamuty from a STS9 show I attended at the Roxy in Boston on 2.23.05. I was sick as a dog . I'd like the thank this dance party track for curing me. Desert funk courtesy of the Phish from Vermont and their liquid take on Gumbo from 7.29.97. Has it rained lately? This Weather Report Suite from Boston 1973 should cure yer blues. Finally, the Ritz Power Jam from 2.6.93 is a show with a who's who from the music scene. Members of Jimi Hendrix Experience, Allman Bros., P-Funk, Blues Traveler, Dave Matthews, Phish and more got together for this killer one off show of covers and jams. I chose the Not Fade Away.
Part two has all Phish (a common theme to be certain) and is also all from audience tapes. The tracks are from a couple of shows I attended first, the Bathtub Gin from a crazy weekend in Las Vegas in 2000. Then, the huge Runaway Jim > Free from Oswego, NY in 1999. Nuff said.
I'm heading to Tupper Lake, NY for the Woodsmen's Days. Enjoy the weekend.

Introducing: Storage Space
My music collection is in shambles. It's all over the place. I've purchased, borrowed, downloaded and moved many times in the cd era (for me: 1993 on) that the music is scattered all over the house. Today for example, I found a Clash album and Phish 8.12.04-II stuffed into Marc Ribot's most excellent of albums Los Prosthetic Cubanos. Unfortunately, the aforementioned excellent album was not in it's respective case. No, no, that was in a non descript case a few slots down. I was flummoxed.
This is what I'm up against with my new idea for this here space. I call this masterpiece- Storage Space. If I muster enough gumption a few times a week, I'll grab 6 discs (completely arbitrary) pick 6 tracks, upload them and share them with you. Dig? This will also be a great way to rediscover my music.
Today's Storage Space comes from a test I did on itunes. I picked the tracks, had an order to them and they obviously uploaded in the wrong order. I'll tell you about the mix in the correct order and leave it up to you to rearrange. Rookie jitters. First up you should check out Welcome Ghosts from Austin based Explosions in the Sky. Dig them in all there instrumental glory. Batting second, is Another Lost Summer from Blanche. It's been raining here for 40 days and nights so the title works. Cool band though. Then move into my fiddling friend Patrick Ross tearing the roof off of the the bluegrass standard Gold Rush. On your left is A.A Bondy's great track American Hearts. Ever seen the movie Once? Struggling musicians, love, vacuum repairs, rain, Britian, it's got it all. Anyway, a great scene takes place in a music store and Falling Slowly is the song they play. Finally, power to the peaceful with a Franti track called Hey World.
Storage Space is available here.
I promise to bring the heat tomorrow. Or not, depends on what I randomly pick up.

Almost there
As it turns out, its really hard to post stuff after your computer breaks, the backup computer is unavailable for 9 weeks and you camp and road trip for a living. Now, with a few weeks off the road and a mere 4 days until the ultimate conquest (hopefully) of the Five Peaks, its time to post like a mofo. Before I get to that however, I need coffee.

Food vs. Hiking: The battle begins
Food wins
So I did it. I had poutine again. It's a rare delicacy here in the Northern Forest, found mostly in quaint diners, the closer to the Canadian border the better. Jessie and I made a pledge this year similar to last years fried dough pledge. No more than once...Well, we have been on the road for a month and I have had poutine, three, count em three times. Man, I love this stuff. Fries, gravy, cheese. Simple, yet bold.
Obligatory hiking book links:
Bill Bryson-for those of you living under rocks this book is great.
Nicolas Howe- an essential read for Five Peaks:Eins Day. The list of escape routes I have scouted for this hike grows every day thanks to this book. It also does an excellent job of portraying how stupid (or lucky) people really are in the wilderness.
Tomorrow-the origins of Five Peaks: Eins Day
Now-Sleep

Birthday Fest
"Birthdays was the worse days. Now, we ship champagne when we're thirsty."-Biggie
Caution this has very little to do with hiking!
Let me tell you about my birthday (April 19 slackers). It all started with an excellent breakfast at Melby's which for some reason I had no idea was for sale (Jessie just gave me the "obviously face."). Then for 2nd breakfast, drive the truck. After that exhilarating hour of driving which took my right by the Five Peaks, it was off to the Ben and Jerry's factory. The night prior, Jessie and I said if that banana was being made or the sample was from the iced plantain family, we would not be amused. Needless to say, Chunky Monkey was being made on the factory floor and the sample was ahem, ugh, Bananas on the Rum. While I agreed with the alcohol content, the main ingredient was slightly less than palatable. Never the less, we got a free cone, which was bold. At the factory 250,000 pints a day are run through and, at the St. Albans factory, an astounding 750,000 pints! Dear God, thats a lot of milk. At least all the cream comes from Vermont cows.
What does any of this have to do with hiking five peaks in eins day? Not much, other than I now have some ice cream to work off. Speaking of work, I will be in St. Albans for the VT Maple Fest starting tomorrow with the truck, luckily in this Northern Forest city we have internet hook-ups in our room. So, I swear some hiking content is coming... Either that or more stories about food.
ciao

Friar Tuck
I hope you all got the Friar Tuck reference in the first post. The mascot for the San Diego Padres is none other than Friar Tuck not this Friar. The mascot looks like a coked out George Wendt (photo) or a Dunkin Donuted out John Goodman. It is now one my life's missions to go to a Padres game just to see this in person.
Friar Tuck as far as Five Peaks: Eins Day is concerned is reinvigorating tea that is drunk at the tops of mountains with sandwiches. Christine has this excellent thermos that holds temps so well even Han Solo would be jealous.
More later...

Welcome to Five Peaks: Eins Day
Today, I got my new hiking boots, the deal was made even better because I was at the LL Bean Factory outlet and got them for only $120! I love the deals, love em. Hopefully, this a good sign for things to come.
This whole blog is created in the spirit of; crazy late night ideas, a bunch of hiking, friar tuck and sandwiches at the top. Those things plus, beer at the bottom will be mentioned without fail in the coming weeks.
